Growing Vital Religious Communities In Canada

Multi-generational Day
You asked for it! You’ve got it!

At the CUC Annual Meeting in 2004, Asha Philar and Youth Observer to the Board, Myda Egrmajer, presented a report on behalf of the youth at CanUUdle (the youth "con") asking for more integration of youth and adults. (See http://cuc.ca/youth  for the "youth document" and Mary Bennett’s response.)

The Youth Advisory Group considered both documents and their own ideas and concerns and proposed having one Multi-generational Day and most of the rest of the time youth at their own site.

On Saturday, from after lunch to 10pm youth will come to McMaster University and be part of the whole community conference.

Here’s what’s planned at this point:

1:45-2pm Ice-breaker games for the whole community

2-3pm Statement of Principles Task Force workshop with everyone

3:15-4:45 Workshops, worship, lectures, networking sessions including lots with youth leadership

5-7pm Empty Bowls dinner

UPDATE on our Multigenerational Meal Saturday May 21, 2005

7:15-8:45 More workshops etc. with folks of all ages

9-10pm Youth-led worship (Note, at YAG’s request, we’re making this earlier so young children and parents can also attend).

Empty Bowls

Several of our congregations regularly host Empty Bowls dinners. See for instance the story in the Fall, 2004 Canadian Unitarian http://cuc.ca/newsletter/canu.htm  for more details.

We are just in formation stages of the event, and will post more information here as decisions are made.

If you can help with the program by bringing or making bowls; or helping with food arrangements, serving and coordination, please send an email to empty-bowls@cuc.ca

Empty Bowls Poster

Allan Moon is a professional potter and has been involved with the Empty Bowls dinner in Thunder Bay since its inception. These are his bowls. He is not a Unitarian, but is considered a friend, and a very good one.

These are some photos of bowls being painted and ‘prepared for the next step’ at a UFL London painting party with some members of the youth group, Abby and Nick, DRE Sarah and Youth Advisor Bob. The ceramic bisque bowls are first glazed with colour, then over-glazed. The over-glaze and firing makes the colours brighten considerably and the glaze creates a hard shiny finish so the bowls can be used for serving food.

All going as planned, they will be ready to head to Hamilton and the Empty Bowls event at the ACM.

Are you making bowls too?

Have you hosted a bowl making event? Send us some pictures!

Empty Bowls Sound Off

CUC Director of Lifespan Learning

Have a vision of a world
Food that children all deserve
For hungry children daily die
And rarely do we hear their cry

We all have dignity and worth,
Every person on this earth.
Hunger proves an unfair test
We need good food to do our best

I am healthy strong and fed
Got friends and family, a nice warm bed
I can fill one empty bowl
Then I can fill a dozen more

I am the power of just one
but fighting hunger must be done
I learn and teach and help my friend
So hunger and poverty soon will end

We mould earth’s clay, enjoy its feel
Create a bowl to hold a meal
Clean it, fire it, glaze it, then
Come and buy it back again!

We work hard toward our goal
Filling all the Empty Bowls
We have enough for all to share
We show U*Us really care.

So plan a party, make some bowls
Educate ‘bout poverty’s tolls
Heed your neighbour’s impassioned call
Eradicate hunger – there’s food for all.

At ACM we’ll turn the page
And plan a meal for babe to sage
Country wide the bowls will come,
To fill with soup for everyone
