Tours

Tour 1

2:00 - 4:30 pm Heart of the City Tour

Despite the one dimensional media publicity about Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside as a “war zone” this walk about will illustrate the strengths and triumphs of local residents against considerable odds in renewing their community through community arts and community activism. Now the Olympics are at hand. Will the community gain or lose? The Olympics were sold as the “inclusive Olympics” so Canada’s reputation is at stake in this issue. Michael Clague, former Director of Carnegie Community Centre in the Downtown Eastside (and UCV member) will lead this tour. It’s an opportunity to hear from some of the people who live and work in the community.

Cost $10

Tour 2

2:00 – 3:00 pm

Unitarian Church of Vancouver Buildings and Landscape Tour

Designed by Wolfgang Gerson and constructed in 1964, the Unitarian Church of Vancouver sanctuary and buildings have been designated by the City of Vancouver as Class A on their Heritage Register as an example of modern architecture in this City. The church was the first post-1940s building added to the City of Vancouver heritage register. The building complex, clustered around a beautiful open courtyard, features cubic composition, overhanging flat roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows. (Erika and Kate Gerson to lead tour)

No charge. Must pre-register.
