Pre-Conference Shared Ministry Days

Ministry is the act of serving. Shared Ministry is what we* do to serve our congregation and the broader community, individually and together. Each individual brings unique gifts to contribute.*includes members of the congregation, paid staff and ordained minister(s). 

This title nicely sums up the purpose of the pre-conference sessions—to connect, educate, support and encourage all those participating in our Shared Ministry.

The Street Retreat is a chance to bring our intentional presence to a day in the streets of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.  Based on a Zen Buddhist practice of walking meditation, we spend a day walking in non-judgment, bearing witness to the joy, suffering and absurdity of life on the streets.

Laura Friedman is a candidate for Unitarian Universalist ministry.  She has been working for the last couple of years founding the Faithful Fools of Vancouver, an interfaith street ministry in the Downtown Eastside.

Nicoline Guerrier is a Ministerial Student and Social Worker who has been designing and leading workshops since 1989.  She has twice studied with Joanna Macy.

“The “H” Word”. 

“Where do we come from? Who are we? Where are we going?”

These words from a chant sung by many, speak to the direction of this year’s Confluence Lecture.  Where does our religious tradition come from?  Who are we now? And where are we going?

Christine is in the sixth year of her ministry at the historic Unitarian Universalist Church of Olinda in Southwest Ontario, and on sabbatical from January to early June.  A long time Unitarian Universalist, she currently chairs the CUC Theological Education Funds Committee and has co-led the UU History Module for religious educators in Canada.

The Victor and Nancy Knight Living Tribute Award Is presented at the CUC Annual Meeting. Funds were received in 1996 for the purpose of establishing a perpetual fund to honour the ideals exemplified by the lives and work of Nancy and Victor Knight in furthering the principles of Unitarianism in Canada. As an encouragement for others to follow their example, an award is to be made annually from the income of the fund to a living person, who has made a notable contribution to the furthering of liberal religious principles in Canada.

ACM FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Where:

Child care (for children up to age 5 or kindergarten age) will take place in a suite at Gage residence which is at UBC, across from the Student Union, our main conference site, providing easy access to families.

Young Fun Children’s Program (for children from age 6 or Grade 1 up to age 11)  will have a “home base” for most of their program at the Gage residence as well.

Child care Saturday May 19 and Sunday May 20, 8 am – 5 pm, Monday May 21 8 am – 11 am 

Young Fun Saturday May 19 8 am – 5pm, Sunday May 20 8 am – 9 pm and Monday May 21,  8 am until 11 am. 

Cost:

Child Care: $50 per child includes supervised activities and snacks. All meals are with families.  

Young Fun: $65 per child for includes all materials and activities, field trips, site entry fees, snacks . Also includes lunch Saturday and Sunday, and an optional Sunday pizza and movie night.

SATURDAY PICNIC  AND  SOUP DINNER TICKETS

The ticket price for these two special events is not included in the registration for child care. Saturday’s picnic would be a great chance for your young children to be with everyone in community so please consider this option when you register! Young Fun, Junior Youth and CanUUdle all will attend the picnic as part of their program. Saturday Soup Dinner is a ticketed event and included in the junior youth and CanUUdle youth program fees ONLY.

Families register at the main CUC registration table at the UBC Student Union Building, second floor – please ensure that children are fully pre-registered and that we have all necessary information regarding any special needs. Young Fun information packs will be available outlining what we are doing for the young fun time!  

FRIDAY NIGHT

Children will attend Friday evening’s banner parade and ingathering with their families. Morning drop off throughout the weekend is after kids have eaten breakfast with their families, but in time for parents to get to early programs. Children can be dropped off at rooms for Young Fun or Child Care between 8 and 8:30 am.  

FIELD TRIP!

Children attending Young Fun will be expected to attend the full program including any pre-planned field trip. If a child is ill or unwilling to attend planned Young Fun events it will be the parent’s responsibility to make alternate arrangements.  

CanUUdle VII
Youth Conference

(planned and run by CanUUdle staff)   

Youth (age 14-20) and their advisors from across the country will be invited to this exciting annual conference May 18-21, 2007. CanUUdle VII will have a home base at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver (UCV) with multigenerational events taking place at University of British Columbia (UBC)  

Friday evening begins with whole community joining together at the ACM Ingathering, UBC Student Union Building. Buses will take CanUUdle participants back to UCV following the Ingathering Ceremonies. Multigenerational Day Saturday begins at lunchtime with a Picnic at UBC, workshop choices after lunch, a multigenerational Soup dinner Saturday – and additional evening workshops. All multigenerational day costs are included in CanUUdle VII registration fee. Youth-led worship, a highlight for many, is Saturday night.  

Sunday’s CanUUdle programs and meals are at UCV. Buses will take CanUUdle participants back to UBC for closing Monday, where a transitions ceremony for youth bridging from ‘youth to young adult’ may participate.  

Youth can choose to attend a variety of inspiring, challenging and FUN workshops during ACM multigenerational day and at their CanUUdle conference. At CanUUdle VII there will be updates from Terre Commune-Winds of Change, the consultative conference held over the labour day weekend in Winnipeg.  Terre Commune leaders may speak to certain proposals they hope will bring positive change in youth ministry systems and structures for the CUC.  

This conference includes a business meeting of our Canadian UU youth, speeches for Youth Observer to the Board, election of YRUU Canadian at Large representative to UUA YRUU Youth Council and national youth Social Action Coordinator (NatSac).  

Details will be sent out on youth lists as “news breaks” and updates will be posted here as well. 

It is the responsibility of each youth attending and their youth group to ensure appropriate sponsorship at CanUUdle. If advisors are not attending with their congregation’s youth, the youth MUST arrange for an advisor from another congregation to sponsor them.  

All advisors and adult staff attending a CUC national youth conference must have a completed Police Records Check. 

Separate additional registration required.

Pre-registration by April 1, 2007.  

Cost: $85 youth $45 advisors.

Junior Youth Rally

ages 12 to 14 

Through fun activities, many great workshops, field trips, touch groups, time with CanUUdle youth and a multigenerational day interacting with all ages we guarantee you’ll have an unforgettable time, in a fabulous setting at the University of British Columbia

This is the third year for our national junior youth rally at the CUC ACM. Last year we had 17 participants and this year we hope for 25!

Date: Friday May 18, 2007 beginning with the Banner Parade and Ingathering in the Student Union Building through Monday May 21, with our closing. Parents/sponsors and junior youth will be asked to attend an orientation Friday evening approximately 9 pm, at the Fireplace Lounge in Gage residence, following the ingathering.

Place: The ACM site, University of British Columbia, will be where most of our program takes place. Gage Residence Fireplace Lounge is our Junior Youth Rally central gathering space. It is your family’s responsibility to make your accommodation arrangements. Junior youth stay with their parents. We may also be spending some time at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver for time with the CanUUdle Youth Conference. 

Cost:  $75 for junior youth ages 12-14 or advisors attending with their congregation’s junior youth . We will have a full compliment of volunteer staff for this rally, AND we welcome junior youth advisors to join us. Advisors who sign up to attend the junior youth rally will be expected to stay with the junior youth throughout their program as we will be building and deepening our sense of community. Advisors will also complete appropriate screening for this high trust position. Price includes all programming, picnic lunch Saturday and lunch Sunday, and the Souper Saturday Supper meal Saturday evening. Some junior youth may choose to dine with their family at the banquet Sunday (ticket required) otherwise please bring money for supper out.  

Closing: An opportunity to participate in a transition ceremony during closing worship will be available to those transitioning to Youth (14)
