Claiming Canadian Unitarian Universalist Women's History Conference - Invisible Influence: Claiming Canadian Unitarian Universalist Women's History

Discover the often neglected contributions of women to our history. Plan now to attend this Conference on Canadian Unitarian & Universalist History, Thursday evening May 15, 2008 and Friday May 16, 2008 at First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa just prior to the CUC 2008 ACM.

This conference is a wonderful opportunity for RE teachers who would like more “Canadian content” in RE; church archivists or historians; and those who just love the stories from our history. A unique opportunity to hear lectures, a pilot Canadian UU Children’s Curriculum, panelists, and view displays from across Canada.

Early registration is encouraged: Send your name, address, phone number, e-mail, congregation, and a registration cheque for $25 (payable to the Kingston Unitarian Fellowship (KUF) with “II: CCUWH registration” in the subject line) to:

II: CCUWH
c/o Kingston Unitarian Fellowship
214 Concession Street Kingston
ON K7P 1G4

Please indicate if you wish tandoori chicken or veggie wrap as your lunch entre (lunch, am and pm breaks are included in registration fee).

And it’s not too late to get involved!

Please contact us about a project that you would like to present at the CCUUWH Conference. Join with others who will present papers, be a part of a panel, display photos of women who were important in the formation of your congregation, a quilt, banner, musical composition, or other artifacts from your archives To discuss your participation in the May 08 Conference contact Rev. Kathy Sage at kufmin@kingston.net or 613-634-7614. More information is on the web site at www.canuuwomenhistory.ca.

Racial, Religious, First Nations, Métis and Inuit Equity and Justice Monitoring - Group Shared Ministry Days One Day Workshop

As part of the ACM Shared Ministry Days, a one-day workshop will be offered by the Racial, Religious, First Nations, Métis and Inuit Equity and Justice Monitoring Group.

Connecting the Canada’s Coast to Coast to Coast (5 C's) is a workshop to help Unitarians*Universalists in Canada explore their individual and collective identities as

Canadians and as UU's. In particular, it identifies the role played by what might be called "heritage identities" in a Canadian U*U context. Heritage identities include the racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic and other groups to which an individual feels connected through her or his family of origin, past or recent experiences, or current reality.

During this interactive session, participants of all ages are invited to take part in full-group and break-out group activities designed to help us better understand the way our differences and common elements play out in our individual lives, in our interpersonal relationships and in our congregations. In addition, we will discuss and practice

empathetic, peacemaking communication techniques and facilitation approaches for community-building. We are hoping to draw people from a wide variety of backgrounds, ages, and interests, including our Francophone and young adult members, in order to form some interesting small working groups to suggest ways of becoming more aware, more inclusive and more responsive.

This workshop is one of three offered by our Monitoring Group. More information is available on the ACM Facebook event page or http://www.cuc.ca/social_responsibility/diversity.htm

Congregational Musicians’ Professional Development Day

Isn’t it about time that we all met?

Join us on Friday May 16th from 9 am to 5 pm at First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa for a special pre-conference day for congregational music leaders, both paid and volunteer.

It’s a chance for congregational music leaders to get together and learn each other’s names.  In a morning roundtable discussion we will talk about the music program in our home congregations, celebrate our successes, and learn how we can encourage the growth of music programs and live music in congregations across the country.

After the lunch break, we will hold a choral-music reading session where each of us can share repertoire and new ideas for the 2008-09 music season!  You will also learn some new things about choral warm-ups, the way the singing voice works, and how to build an amateur congregational choir and keep them engaged.

There will be a chance for everyone to peruse the Music Table, where there will be samples of UU-friendly choral music to view.  If you are a composer and wish to bring some music to sell at the table, or if you have a choral or instrumental CD to sell, I would be delighted to hear from you!

The registration fee for the professional day is $50 (includes lunch and coffee breaks) if you also register for the whole weekend conference; or $75 if you register only for the day.  Please confirm your participation with Jane Perry, ACM Choir Director at choir@cuc.ca

Want to get a head-start meeting your fellow UU musicians and arts-minded people?

Why not join the cuc-music@yahoogroups.com to link up with other Canadian UU musicians; and consider contributing to http://cuc.ca/arts/index.htm to share your poetry, stories, or music ideas with other UUs across Canada.  For more information about these groups, please contact CUC Executive Director Mary Bennett at mary@cuc.ca
