Frequently asked questions about Yahoo Groups

Announcement lists:

Between one and four e-mails per month of CUC or UU-related information.

We find these are a popular and effective way for people to easily get information they want without being burdened with a lot of discussion email.  Since each one guarantees few (usually only 1) message per month and you can join or leave any time you want, to it’s easy for us and for you.  Since these email lists are open to anyone at all you are welcome, even encouraged, to forward any of the information (but keep the information of where it came from and how others can join, please) to anyone you feel would find it of interest.

Discussion lists: anyone can join but discussion is kept to the topics listed in the welcome message you’ll receive. To avoid spam, you will be asked to send information about your interest when you try to join some lists. On some lists, new members can join immediately and their first messages are “moderated”, i.e. your message will go to the group owner for approval. Assuming it’s on topic, it will be approved and your messages will go directly to the list in future. Our goal is that two members of each group will be moderators who will be able to add new members. Right now some groups are moderated by CUC staff. All of these groups include CUC staff who are available to assist technically or in other ways. However, if you wish your message to reach a staff member you are advised to send it directly to the individual rather than on the email list (as we often “scan” or check “no email” because of the volume of email when we’re busy or traveling.

Frequently Asked Questions About Yahoo Groups

Q: How do I change my e-mail address on all my Yahoo Groups?

A: If you don’t have a Yahoo Account (related to a Yahoo Profile),

(1) Make a list of all the Yahoo Groups you receive mail from.  If your list is a long one, or you can’t remember all the groups you’re subscribed to, you’ll want to seriously consider creating a Yahoo Account (described below) to do this, rather than following steps 2 and 3 here.

(2) For each group, send an e-mail from your new address to groupname-subscribe@yahoogroups.com (substituting the actual Yahoo Group name for groupname).

(3) For each group, send an e-mail from your old address to groupname-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com (again substituting the actual Yahoo Group name for groupname).

Q: What’s a Yahoo Account and why do I want one?

A: The Yahoo Account is an effective way to manage your e-mail subscriptions to Yahoo Groups.  It allows you to easily see which Groups you are subscribed to, and quickly change options for mail delivery, such as “individual e-mail” or “daily digest” (which is helpful for busy lists, since it consolidates the day’s discussions into a single e-mail), or “no e-mail” (which is very useful when you go on vacation).  Also, you can easily select which e-mail address to send mail to (in case you’re changing e-mail accounts or maintain multiple accounts).  Plus, your Account gives you access to additional Yahoo Groups features which allow sharing of files, photos and other information.

Q: How do I create a Yahoo Account?

A:      (1) Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/   and click "Click here to register"

(2) Check your inbox and verify your e-mail address by responding to the automated e-mail message that was sent to you by Yahoo.

(3) Go to http://edit.yahoo.com/config/set_profile  and add your other e-mail address(es)

(4) Verify your additional e-mail address(es).

(5) Log in using your Yahoo Groups account: http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups

(6) Ask Yahoo to "find" your groups: http://groups.yahoo.com/memwiz

Q: How do I change my e-mail address on all my Yahoo Groups if I have an Account?

A:      (1) Go to http://edit.yahoo.com/config/set_profile and add your new e-mail address

(2) Verify your e-mail address by responding to the automated e-mail message.

(3) Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups and click "Edit my groups"

(4) At the bottom of the list, “Set All Of The Above To” your new e-mail address, and “Save Changes”.
