Recognizing Thresholds and Honouring Transitions

Ceremonies to celebrate pivotal events in life

Change is hard.  But learning to recognize the thresholds and transitions in life and to honour them is key to living a spiritual and happy life.  In this workshop, Katherine Roback, a Lay Chaplain from the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, will help us to help others recognize what an experience is teaching us, how to let go of what no longer fits, how to name what we’re letting go of and how to ready ourselves for what’s next.

Ceremonies can recognize many kinds of pivotal events, from “coming of age” to coming out, to croning or saging – honouring the age of wisdom, to moving away.  A ceremony can help bring closure to difficult transitions like divorce, and to getting ready for death.  It honours the shifting sands of pivotal moments and helps us to rebalance.  Ceremony affirms the struggle and the ambiguities, shows the path through it, and gathers support and community to aid the transition.

We will consider:

  • Unusual Celebrations
  • Trading stories
  • Learning moments
  • Milestone Celebrations
  • and much more.

In this workshop you will learn to identify occasions worthy of ceremony, to help your congregants or people in the broader community in their growth.  You will learn more about the process of ritual and symbolism and how to design meaningful rituals.  And you will have the opportunity to practice some of what you’ve learned in small groups.
