Growing Vital Religious Communities In Canada

Religious Education Spans a Lifetime VIDEO

All congregations were given one copy of this video. Additional copies can be purchased from www.cuc.ca/store.

Here are some suggestions for using the CUC’s new RE video—gleaned largely from meetings with congregation members in Fredericton, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

  Show to:

Within your congregation

How you use it in your own congregation will depend partly on whether you have your own building and video equipment; the size of your congregation, etc. Here are some ideas to consider:

  • New and potential RE teachers to give them an idea of the overall idea
  • Child care assistants so they understand the framework they’re working in (i.e. not “just” babysitting)
  • Parents who are thinking of attending regularly, e.g. with a new family, offer them the video and say: “and then we can talk more about what you’d like for your child.”
  • New members in general, e.g. at New U/U classes
  • Parents. It shows “we bring the whole child in”
  • Small groups that meet as a focus for discussion
  • Show to youth/older kids and focus a discussion on social justice projects
  • Show it “trade show” fashion, i.e. as part of a display on “Committee Sunday” or when taking registrations for RE
  • At a family camp
  • Give teachers, especially those in smaller societies, ideas for new classes or different approaches to teaching

To others

  • If you have a preschool or daycare in your building, suggest they watch it to “get to know you and your program”
  • Suggest that members show it or lend it to friends who have expressed interest
  • Encourage parents and teachers who work at or are members of other family groups (e.g. Family Resource Centre, play group, etc.) to lend it or show it to people there

   Other suggestions:

  • Order several copies and offer for sale if you have a church book store
  • Use portions of the video for particular groups or topics---you don’t have to always use the whole video
  • Have it available at a lunch break for people who want to watch it
  • Show it often; lend it generously—People will often feel comfortable watching a video multiple times and get more out of it each time.
  • When you show it, talk about or give a handout on the programs that your congregation has and when they are (e.g. even if it only happens every few years)
