DRUG POLICY REFORM VIDEO
FOR SALE
A 60 min video (VHS) with a discussion
manual featuring selections from a panel on alternatives
to drug prohibition held in Victoria, British Columbia,
April 6, 2002, has been produced.
The panel was sponsored by the Social
Responsibility Committee of the First Unitarian Church
of Victoria, organized by Matthew McRee Elrod, Webmaster
of UUDPR, and in part funded by a grant from the UUA.
Panellists
included Matthew McRee Elrod, Prof. Barry Beyerstein, MP
Libby Davies, Dr. David Hadorn, and Rev. J. McRee Elrod.
The video is divided into five
sections:
1. Is America's War on Drugs Canada's
issue?
2. The anthropology of drugs
3. What are the real costs of prohibition?
4. What are the alternatives? (What are their
challenges?)
5. How can we promote change?
The historical presence of drugs is assumed. From
there, the question becomes, how do we address this
reality. Models from around the world are
discussed, including some of their challenges. The
costs to human lives and to communities' sense of
security and well-being are taken into
consideration. Viewers will have the opportunity
to sense that there is both dignity in the drug users'
request for justice and pain in the families whose loved
ones have suffered with addiction.
The video with discussion manual is
being sent to each Canadian Unitarian congregation.
Anyone else wishing a copy may order
