Canadian Unitarian Council...

Appointed by the

Board of the

Canadian Unitarian Council

Process & Timeline

May 2002 The spelling of the UUA principles was "Canadianized" and adopted as an Interim Statement of Principles at the 2002 CUC Annual Conference & Meeting in Kelowna.
Winter 2002/3 The CUC Board developed a mandate and appointed a Statement of Principles Task Force.
Spring/Summer 2003 The Task Force set about defining a process to lead Canadian congregations in revisiting the Principles.  Articles were written and background material was compiled.
Winter 2003/4 -
Spring 2004
Congregational Workshops were held across the country to articulate the values and aspirations of Canadian U*Us.  Submissions from the workshops were sent to the Task Force and were compiled into a single volume (PDF format, 368KB).
May 2004 An Interim Report was presented at the 2004 CUC Annual Conference & Meeting in Edmonton.  A workshop was conducted at the ACM to discuss the report in more detail.
Summer 2004 The Task Force completed its analysis of the data received from the Congregational Workshops.  The Task Force identified key themes that appeared consistently in the workshops and was then able to construct a "matrix" comparing those themes to the current Statement of Principles.  The Task Force then issued a recommendation to revise the current Statement of Principles.
Fall 2004 The Task Force created a first draft of the new Statement of Principles, which was circulated to member congregations in January for review and to prompt discussion.  An accompanying document explained the rationale behind the wording.
Winter 2004/5 2nd Congregational Workshops were held across the country to discuss the first draft of the new Statement.  Individuals were requested to send feedback on the first draft via the Task Force website.
May 2005 The Task Force analyzed the responses from the 2nd Congregational Workshops and presented the conclusions and recommendations for next steps at the 2005 CUC Annual Conference & Meeting in Hamilton.  The CUC Board refined the mandate of the Task Force.
Fall 2005 -
Spring 2006
In response to feedback received directly from member congregations and at the 2005 Annual Conference & Meeting, the Task Force developed a 3rd Congregational Workshop to help member congregations in reviewing the current Statement of Principles & Sources.  A trial of the (abbreviated) workshop was conducted at the 2006 Annual Conference & Meeting in Saint John.
Fall 2006 -
Spring 2007

Congregations were invited to conduct 3rd Congregational Workshops to review the current Statement of Principles using the template developed by the Task Force.  Alternatively, some congregations conducted a "workship" service.

The Task Force also facilitated workshops at the 2006 Regional Fall Gatherings.

Members provided feedback via the Questionnaire on the Current Statement.

May 2007 The preliminary Results of the Questionnaire on the Current Statement of Principles were presented at the 2007 CUC Annual Conference & Meeting in Vancouver.
Fall/Winter 2007 The Task Force completed its analysis of the results of the Questionnaire on the Current Statement of Principles.  As the Task Force wrestled with issues raised by the analysis, we realized the need to consult with ministers and theologians in Canada and in the wider movement.
February 2008

The Task Force presented its findings from the workshops on the current Statement of Principles to the February 2008 meeting of the CUC Board.

One recommendation, which the Board supported, was to provide increased opportunities for education and exploration of the Sources by our members.

Other recommendations included pursuing specific wording changes. Of special note was the concern raised in the workshops regarding the naming of Jewish and Christian traditions in the Sources, the need for an explicit Call to Action, and inclusion of the concept of Environmental Stewardship.

The Board acknowledged that these issues were complex, and that some would be touched on during the planned Go-4-It! “Identity” initiative.  The Board elected to defer further discussion on these matters until after that initiative, and thus chose to bring closure to the current Task Force process.

The Board acknowledged that the Task Force has fulfilled its mandate, and expressed its gratitude for the work undertaken.

May 2008 The final report was formally presented to the 2008 CUC ACM in Ottawa.
