Writing Opportunities with the CUC
Who writes for the CUC?
Much of the writing for CUC is done either by staff or volunteers or come by way of unsolicited items for publications.
Prior to 2006, Art Kilgour had been editor of Canadian Unitarian for eight years and did all of the editing and most of the writing. Since then, we have recruited several freelance writers who regularly contribute.
We wish to extend our list of freelance writers available to do short, timelimited (often 2 weeks from start to finish) writing or editing assignments.
The approach of “many voices” has received good feedback and we are continually looking for additional writers to add to the list of writers. We want to have diverse ages, viewpoints and geographical locations represented in our group of writers. We expect to institute quarterly “writers meetings” via teleconference to share ideas and build a team.
We continue to welcome unsolicited (and unpaid) pieces as well as those written by staff, board and volunteers as a regular part of their contribution to CUC.
The kinds of writing/editing assignments we contract for include:
  • interview several (3-5) people involved in some aspect of UU life and then write an article of about 5-700 words
  • research or interview and write short pieces (100-250 words) on congregational events and celebrations
  • edit a sermon or lecture down to 650 words for publication in the From the Pulpit page in CanU
  • work with a selected individual  to produce a “Testimony” column (see CanU webpage for description)
  • interview new board members, staff or volunteers to write an announcement for CanU
  • Take pieces from congregational newsletters or other sources and edit to fit style and size (often 90-100 words) for CanU columns such as “Across the Country”; “International” and “In Memoriam”.
  • Best practices: Interview and collect information for sharing congregational “best practices”

Most assignments require checking with the original author or subject on the final piece and also obtaining a high-resolution photo and permission to use. A piece about a congregation needs to be shown to the president and minister before running.
Honoraria ranges from $50 for a piece of about 250 words to $200 for a cover story of 600-800 words with several photos.
Unsolicited articles are invited on a volunteer basis and may be edited for clarity and length.
