Growing Vital Religious Communities In Canada

Your Social Justice Coordinators

National

Anna Bishop

Hey! I was elected as NatSAC last May at CanUUdle. My passion started when I took part in a semester-long program offered to all highschools in Guelph called CELP (Community Environmental Leadership Program). We went winter camping, led a junior-ecology program called Earthkeepers, and biked around our city to learn more about active citizenship. Since then I’ve led our school’s Environment Club and Student Outreach Club. I am a proud member of the international organization Roots and Shoots, and participated in their Global Youth Summit on Environmental and Social Justice Issues last April. Currently I am working on establishing a highschool activist group to join the University of Guelph’s organization Drop Fees.

I’ve been trying to contact each congregation in Canada and establish a ‘Youth Social Justice Rep’ in each youth group. This person would receive emails with more information on current social justice issues and ideas for projects and campaigns.

If you are interested in receiving these emails, whether you are a part of a youth group or not, please email me and I’ll add you to the list! I’ve been updating this website as well, and if you have any comments/suggestions email away.

I believe that change won’t happen unless people have genuine passion, drive, and commitment. But for someone to care about an issue, they need to know about it. They need to know why they should care and how that issue affects them. That is what the purpose of this website is, so you and your youth groups can read up on issues, get project ideas, and get out there and DO something!

I've always been baffled by people who talk about making a change in the world, but never seem to get around to it. Unitarian Universalism has been a part of my life since age thirteen and has always worked to empower me to believe in youth and in myself. The Pride Rainbow Project is what really kick started my interest in social activism. All it took was the four of us, an idea, a lot of dedicated work from supporters and before we knew it, we were in Ottawa! GLBTQ rights have been my primary focus so far, but I'm looking forward to exploring other issues in the future with the YRUU in BC.

I grew up in Calgary, AB and moved to Nanaimo, BC September '05 to study for my Social Work BA at Malaspina UC. I'm excited to be working towards a career

that incorporates my love of volunteering and social action. If you have ANY feedback, questions, or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me at pinklemons@gmail.com.
