The Consultation on Ministry To and With Youth is a new UUA two-year process to review and re-vision for their association’s overall youth ministry.

A copy of the Consultation brochure is included in the October 2005 mailing for your information.

Our CUC engagement in processes leading up to UUA Consultation is shown in the timeline, below.

Timeline:

2003 January YRUU Long Range Planning meetings, Boston. Sylvia Bass West as DLL and Asha Philar (youth) are participants. Many recommendations come from these meetings, most requiring significant additional funds for youth ministry from UUA.

2003 August UUA YRUU Youth Council met with UUA President Rev. Bill Sinkford (who attended council for an afternoon) to hear UUA youth ministry vision, and consider and offer input on an evaluation process around UUA youth ministry.

2004 August UUA President Bill Sinkford attends Youth Council for 2 days, again to further dialogue around the process and resolution, now being termed Common Ground III, reflecting the UUA’s overall youth ministry, including YRUU. The YRUU Youth Council eventually found itself at blocked consensus on this resolution and the process was put on hold.

2004 Fall/Winter UUA Board directs a new process for youth ministry evaluation/re-visioning, and instructed Bill Sinkford to call for a meeting of select stakeholders as a first step.

2005 February Phillip Pike from CUC YAG attends stakeholders meetings in Boston A group from these meetings prepares a process document.

2005 May UUA Youth Office Program Director Jesse Jaeger attends CUC Board meeting to offer15 minute presentation, as update/information and asks us (CUC Board) to begin dialogue around how we see CUC engagement with the unfolding UUA Youth ministry consultation process.

2005 June UUA General Assembly. Consultation process endorsed by UUA  -process publicly announced and information workshops available at GA. Sylvia is formally asked by co-convenors to serve on UUA Consultation Taskforce. Sylvia declines invitation, with regret, due to many portfolio demands.

2005 July YRUU Youth Council asks for more youth representation on Taskforce including one Canadian

2005 August Tom Rylett from South Peel congregation recommended to serve as Canadian Youth representative. Tom accepts and will serve on UUA Taskforce.

2005 September CUC Board makes formal motion to engage in UUA Consultation processes.

According to Beth Dana, Youth Ministry Associate with UUA, a survey will go out to all UUA congregations/stakeholders. Following that a member of the UUA taskforce will be attending and leading a workshop at every district meeting the 2006 church year. A formal survey and workshop at each of our CUC regional fall gatherings for fall 2006 will likely be part of the plan. Tom Rylett will be able to keep us informed as decisions are made.
